Advantages

  • Extremely robust structure.
  • Amazing looks
  • Colorful RGB lighting.

Disadvantages

  • Almost moist, mushy switches.
  • Absurdly pricey.
  • Hardcore gamers may not like the lack of macro keys.

These days, Razer appears to create keyboards for everyone: full-size ones with linear, optical switches, smaller 60 per cent and 65 per cent ones for space-saving, and even an analogue one for those who seek controller-like accuracy. Looking through its lineup, it appears that the company lacks one major growth area: a low-profile gaming keyboard.

To address that issue, Razer has created the DeathStalker V2 Pro: a premium low-profile gaming keyboard that, in typical Razer form, comes with an exorbitant price tag—£250/$250 to be exact. The benefit of using lower profile switches is straightforward: shorter key travel equals faster inputs and, perhaps, a snappier typing experience.

That wasn’t enough for Razer, but their Linear Red Low Profiles are also optical, which means they operate at the speed of light, making these some of the greatest key switches available for pro gamers and us regular humans equally.

But, to be honest, I wasn’t really pleased with Razer’s low-profile optical switches. While I’m not typically a fan of linear switches in general, these felt scratchy and a little soft, especially when contrasted to the MX Speed Silver Low Profiles found in Cherry’s MX Board 10.0N RGB(opens in new tab) that I’ve looked at previously.

If you’re a lover of Razer products, you might think I’m spoiling your fun right away, but I’m happy to report that things are looking up from here. The build quality is outstanding, with no deck flex and a stylish metal and plastic frame. Aside from the RGB lighting, which is similar to the MX 10.0N, nothing about the DeathStalker V2 Pro screams “gaming keyboard.”

In a world where physical controls are being exchanged left, right, and centre, the addition of physical buttons to change devices on the top side does provide some welcome tactility.

The battery life of wireless keyboards has historically been a source of contention, and Razer is no exception, but the DeathStalker V2 Pro packs some serious endurance. With the backlighting set to 50% or so, you’ll get 40 hours of use, which is equal to that found in Asus’ ROG Claymore II, for example. With it turned off, Razer claims you can get up to 10 days of the charge, giving you more than a week of powerful gaming.

Regarding backlighting, the RGB on this keyboard is a typical Razer, with strong coverage underneath the keys and colours that look vibrant and clear. At least, in this case, the lighting enhances the design of the product rather than detracting from it, as it occasionally does with other keyboards.

The latter provided a nearly zero latency connection that didn’t stutter over longer distances, which really is useful for those who might game on their PC while sitting on a sofa. While Bluetooth is certainly a stable option and provides a good tether between peripherals and PC, it does decline out over longer distances.

Finally:

Razer’s Synapse 3 handles software and offers an excellent level of configuration along with the same functions for controlling lighting and remapping buttons as before. It’s one of the better peripheral software packages available, allowing you to sync your light sources with a set of Philips Hue smart bulbs and control it via Amazon Alexa if desired.

The Razer DeathStalker V2 Pro is a fascinating option for those looking for a premium low-profile gaming keyboard with the brand’s signature flair and feature set. It’s well-built, looks great, and has some of the most vibrant illuminations on a gaming keyboard available today. But, while the most important aspect of any keyboard is arguably its feel, I can’t help but be disappointed by the optical linear red options presented here.

Also, at £250/$250, it’s not cheap, and frankly, you could do it effectively for the money.
