We tested the first 15.6-inch Zephyrus Duo in 2020 and an upgraded version in February 2021, and the engineering of the system has always pleased us. Placing two screens into a startlingly thin chassis is an accomplishment, and the tilted secondary panel provides useful extra real estate. While the basic principle remained the same, this model includes a larger main panel, minor design changes, and different refresh rates that vary with resolution.

Let’s start with the thin design, which hasn’t changed despite the revisions. If you told me a gaming laptop has two displays, I’d imagine a massive monster of a machine. However, the Asu’s Duos have always been thin computers. Even having the main screen increased to 16 inches the laptop remains compact: It weighs 5.63 pounds and measures 0.81 by 13.98 by 10.47 inches (HWD).

That’s adequate for any 16-inch gaming laptop, or even just one with two screens, one of which is nicely packed inside the frame. It’s appropriate to say that the hefty price reflects what’s required to complete this design. Asus deserves credit for keeping the Duo 16 compact while allowing for a larger 16-inch, 16:10-aspect-ratio primary display.

Those Dual Screens: Double the Panel Specifications

The larger primary screen is likewise more sophisticated than previously. First, Asus provides two display panel options: QHD and a dynamic resolution “dual spec” option (more on that in a moment). Because the display has a 16:10 aspect ratio, the resolutions are taller equivalent rather than the conventional 16:9 resolutions. That means the QHD panel in our review model has a native resolution of 2,560-by-1,600 pixels and a refresh rate of 165Hz.

Meanwhile, the dual-spec panel is something new. Whereas the resolution and refresh rate on our QHD-screen unit fixes this screen supports many at 4K and full HD, which means it can change the refresh rates as well as the resolutions to suit diverse use cases. Depending on your needs, you may run full HD at 240Hz or 4K at 120Hz on this screen.

Pairing 4K resolution and a 240Hz frame rate would place a significant burden on the GPU. nearly no games play in this manner. Therefore Asus has linked the greater refresh rate to the lesser resolution. However, because our equipment lacks this type of panel, we can only assume.

Automatic adaption sounds convenient, but if you need to switch to 120Hz and 4K, you can get the same effects on any laptop by manually restricting the frame rate and altering the resolution in-game configurations. However, if a 4K panel maxes out at 120Hz (as many do because reaching as high as 240Hz isn’t practicable at 4K), you can’t change the screen’s hardware limit in-game settings.
