Gaming laptop manufacturers have been aggressively releasing new and refreshed models for the past few months. Intel, AMD, and Nvidia recently released brand-new high-end hardware, beginning with the CES trade show in January of this year. Laptops with all of these new CPUs and GPUs are now hitting the market, and we’ve gotten our hands on a few of them.
Today, we’ll discuss our first impressions of AMD’s latest high-performance laptop CPUs, the Ryzen 6000 series. The company sent me an Asus demo unit based on the top-end Ryzen 9 6900HX CPU, and we’ll see how it compares to Intel’s high-end 12th-generation processor.
Asus ROG Strix G15 (2024) Overview
Asus has gone all out with the design of its 2024 Strix models, with all kinds of accents that you may or may not like. A light strip runs across the front and sides, and per-key RGB keyboard backlighting. This is not an ultraportable gaming laptop but it is portable enough for everyday use. AMD’s latest Ryzen 6000 series processors are used on the inside.
Asus provides a 2560x1440p 165Hz display, which has a good density for a display of this size. It’s sufficiently non-reflective, crisp, and vibrant. It works well with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GPU. In addition, you get 16GB of DDR5 RAM and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD.
Overall performance is strong, and the games are entertaining. You might be disappointed with the port selection and layout. This is an excellent laptop if you want to play high-end games for a few years without spending a fortune.
Good Side
- Excellent overall performance
- Fans who are relatively quiet
- Good speakers
Bad Side
- Port selection and placement could have been improved.
- Inadequate keyboard layout for work
- External webcam
The ROG Strix G15 features a sleek design and a powerful core experience for severe gaming and multitasking on Windows 11 Home. It offers high-FPS power that takes full advantage of up to a blazing-fast display, with up to the latest 4th Gen AMD Ryzen CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce GPU.
Asus Rog Strix G15 Upgrade to the Next Generation
An ultrafast refresh rate of 300Hz makes the flow of fast-paced action appear impeccably smooth and reduces motion blur for precise target tracking. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU produces smooth frame rates, while the AMD Ryzen 4000 series CPU handles heavy lifting or multitasking.
Intelligent Cooling by ROG
ROG’s Intelligent Cooling philosophy combines the appropriate features and system settings to provide the best possible experience. Cutting-edge enhancements such as a liquid metal compound on the CPU and a well-ventilated exterior keep noise levels lower than the previous generation.
WIFI
Ultrafast Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) allows you to game at LAN speeds wherever compatible connections are available. ROG RangeBoost improves reception by assessing the signal strength of four internal antennas and selecting the best pair for your location, reducing dead spots and increasing range by up to 30%.
Having Good Looks
The ROG Strix G15 seamlessly blends everyday durability and athletic style, from its aluminium-capped lid to its textured base. The metal top protects against knocks and bumps while allowing for slimmer bezels. For more comfortable marathon gaming sessions, the plastic palm rest stays cool to the touch. The cross-hatched grip along the bottom keeps the chassis planted while playing, making it easier to grab on the go.
